Well it’s been a week since the series got put up on Netflix and I know a lot of people have already binged it (or even watched it multiple times). The tag for The Umbrella Academy (tv) on ao3 is already at 169 entries and it wasn’t even there just a week ago!

Because of all that I figured it’s time to do a general discussion post for season one. What are people’s thoughts? Which parts did you like best? Do you have favourite characters? Do you have a favourite episodeL What do you think about the changes from the comic?

Klaus is amazing! I knew he’d be my favourite since he was in the comic but he managed to be even better

I haven't read the comic I was somewhat aware of them just haven't had axcess to them sadly but I was a mcr lover and I am so stoked about it, yeah I was so hoping for a Cha-cha hazel love story after that but I understood where they went that's why we have fan fic right lol. I think Klaus is the best part of the show so I hope we get more it's too good

Five is my favorite character, by far. I also like Hazel a lot, though. (I have a thing for grumpy/scarcastic characters who like one specific kind of food/drink, haha.) I've never read the comics - I'm not a comic fan - so I can't say anything about changes from there. Other favorite characters include ChaCha, Agnes and Luther. I don't really ship anyone except Hazel and Agnes. I'll be VERY angry if something happens to them in the second season (which I hope will be produced).

I need a fandom, though! Where is the fandom? *looks around*

Five was so awesome, they managed to find such an awesome actor for him. Hehe sarcastic characters are awesome. I’m glad that people that hadn’t read the comic like you checked it out! I know comics aren’t a medium for everyone so I’m glad more people have got a chance to see it.

Hazel and Agnes were so adorable, I ended up rooting for them so hard (which I never expected going into it!) I really hope they announce a second season soon

I’m hoping the fandom will build up a bit more soon. Tumblr has been good for gifs of practically everything and ao3 has a ton of fics (over 200 now!) so here’s hoping

Yeah, the actor who plays Five is absolutely phenomenal. Kid characters are always tough to get right, especially if you cast a weak kid actor who hasn't fleshed out their acting abilities yet, but this one just NAILS Five as a sarcastic/cranky/fatalistic older guy trapped in a young body. (I guess I relate to Five so much because people constantly think I'm a LOT younger than I actually am as well and they treat me accordingly, and it's annoying as hell when you're in your mid-thirties and people think you're barely even 18. Also, I'm basically 80 on the inside. And cranky. And grumpy. And cynical.)

I also never expected to name a HETERO ship as my favorite, this almost NEVER happens, but these two just struck a nerve with me. Agnes is just so cute with her love for Hazel and he's just adorable with his whole "Imma quit my job, I hate it, I wanna be with YOU, apocalypse be damned". AWWWW.

Yeah I've been meaning to go gif-searching on Tumblr! I figured people there would love the show, haha!

Yeah they said in s I fi now that he was the hardest part to cast. But yeah he is amazing, you’re right he totally nailed it! Aww I’m a lot like that too, the cranky part not the mistaken for younger (though that has happened)

Yeah it’s weird for me to like a het ship too! But yeah they were just so sweet together. I was so worried towards the end that something would happen to her, so I’m so glad they made it. And yess that made me awww too!

I SCREAMED at my TV when Agnes was stuck in that chair! "DON'T YOU DARE! DON'T YOU DARE!" lol I relate to Hazel a lot as well - I constantly complain about my job and I love donuts and basically anything sweet, lol.

Going in I was sure that Klaus would be my favourite character, and he is. But what I didn't expect was I'd like Diego and Five almost as much.

Acting wise, Aidan Gallagher knocked it out of the park. I think he nailed the part and it's hard to believe he's so young. In fact, until I Googled him I suspected he could be one of those actors who look much younger than they actually are, but nope. He made me believe in his relationship with Dolores, seeing how much she kept him going, which is impressive considering she's a mannequin. Just that detail said so much about how lonely he must have been.

I really hope there's a season two.

I was wondering if they were going to go with an everyone-in-child-bodies thing for season two, but the truth is that it's amazing to find even one child actor who can play an adult trapped in a kid-body that well, and finding seven sounds waaaaaay too hard, so I guess We Shall See.

That would be amazing, but I think you're right, finding enough actors to pull it off would be almost impossible.

But it's such an intriguing possibility.

seriouslyyyyyyyyyyyyy, I was googling season two before I even finished s1, I am SO CURIOUS what their next step here is going to be!!! The Day That Wasn't feels like it was telling in terms of the dramatic, interventionist time-travel stuff they're willing to do, and I think I trust the show to do it well?

I'm not finished with the series, so I'm not reading any of these comments YET, but I wrote up a few thoughts about the episodes I have seen HERE

(mostly just about how I love Ben SO. DAMN. MUCH, and also how about a billion MCR songs are perfectly and entirely Umbrella Academy character songs--which makes SENSE, but is also VERY COOL, and, I think, a sign of how on-the-right-track the series is)

Five was amazing. I expected to love Klaus, and I knew Ellen Page as Vanya was going to be heartwrending and perfect, but I was not expecting the kid.

And Hazel and Cha-cha. Amazing. Honestly, Unreally loved the casting in general. I only read the first arc of the comic--I think the comic is conceptually brilliant, but the show grounds everything and makes the consequences more real.

I also think the show handled the odd timing/complex timelines beautifully. Friday night we were up 'til 4am watching the first 8 episodes, and didn't realize it, it waz so tightly plotted and emotionally engaging.

Yeah he really was! They found an incredible actor to play him. They’ve said often his was the hardest role to cast and they completely found the right person for it

That’s amazing! Yeah they did it so well, I can see why lots of people binged it so fast. I only had to stop the second day of watching because I went tired, but a few hours later I ended up finishing it because I just had to know what happened

YES, they are each so DIFFERENTLY and UNIQUELY fucked up!! he paid attention to them, he took their personalities into account, and then he was ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE in a way that was tailored to each of them! WTF , REGINALD??

My fave characters are Five and Vanya! :D:D:D

And the canon het pairings basically all work a lot better for me than I would have expected them to, though Leonard/Vanya became very disappointing after the reveal.

(A lot of things about Leonard became very disappointing after first ten or so minutes of episode seven, and I find myself wishing that it had been handled differently.)

And the dysfunctional Hargreeves family - as well as its little parallel in Jenkins’ backstory - is very compelling! I love how this series explores various kinds of dysfunction like that!

And Hazel and Cha Cha are an amazing combination of humour and danger, of whimsy and darkness - which, quite honestly, sums up everything about the series - and I love that! :D:D:D

And the Temps Commission! :D:D:D

And the end was amazing! :D:D:D

Though I really wish it was actually clear what Luther’s powers are. Like, I know he’s part-ape now but... that’s not his original power soooo... what exactly could he do, pre-apeficiation?

I could see it coming. I kinda hoped that I was wrong about it, that I was being too suspicious but I proved to be right.

Yeah, it did it all so well! It was such an awesome series. I need to watch it again soon to flail again

I can’t wait to find out what happens next with it!

Luther’s powers were super strength (though I get how that could be unclear)
